I know next to nothing about architectural history, and I acquired this book partly because my father happened to have a duplicate copy, and partly because I recognised the author's name as that of a former colleague. However, I found it a very interesting read: it's both a very detailed account of the NER office buildings themselves (although the book covers both the London and York buildings, the emphasis is on the latter) and a fascinating study of how the railway company and their show more architect dealt with what was then a rather novel challenge: to produce a practical, large office building with an impressive exterior on a relatively confined city centre site.
Bill Fawcett produced the book with the assistance of the building's then owners, GNER, and there is a generous selection of photographs and plans to illustrate the details of the structure. show less
