Unique, wonderful score (and there's a reason it's short...), March 29, 2004
Reviewer: Ryan Harvey "Wolf Shadow" (Los Angeles, CA USA) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER) (REAL NAME)
The release of re-mastered editions of the James Bond scores offered up some great albums that expanded the original soundtracks with extra cues ("Thunderball" and "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" are particularly superb). However, "Moonraker," one of the best scores of the series and one of the most lyrical and unusual (especially when you consider what a silly slapstick film it accompanies) arrived on CD in a bare-bones 30-minute edition that replicates the original LP version with no extra tracks.

This is an unfortunate occurrence, but the people loudly complaining and blaming EMI need to understand that the album producers had no choice. They wanted an expanded album (who wouldn't? more people would buy it), but there was a major stumbling block because of the way the "Moonraker" recording sessions were originally produced. "Moonraker" was a French-British co-production for tax reasons, and most of the film was shot in France. The recording sessions were also done in France, and the original masters reside in vaults in Paris. The American producers of this album were unable to obtain access to these master tapes to make a longer version, and the work to get them would have been prohibitively expensive -- which would mean no album at all.

I too am disappointed we don't have a longer "Moonraker" album; however, the re-mastered sound and the general brilliance of the music makes it impossible for me to give this album anything less than five stars. I've loved this album for years, and still do. I think it shows John Barry at his best, and it's the most experimental score for a Bond film. Barry avoids the period music clichés (except for a slight disco beat under the end titles) that plagued Hamlisch's "The Spy Who Loved Me" score, and he also ignores the silliness of the film and turns in a serious, ethereal, and sensual score. Regardless of length, the "Moonraker" score wields a potent spell.

The theme song, sung by Shirley Bassey of "Goldfinger" fame, never became a big hit, but it's one of the best songs from a Bond film: exotic, timeless, and filled with soaring romanticism. Barry uses the heavy romantic melody in the cue "Bond Meets Dr. Goodhead," one is one of the album's most beautiful tracks. The theme also appears in the first half of "Bond Arrives in Rio and Boat Chase," this time with an understated calypso beat and chorus.

Barry ditches one of his signatures styles of the Bond series, the brassy and sassy use of trumpets and horns, for a more elegant and smooth approach. (In fact, you won't hear "The James Bond Theme" anywhere on this album, although it does appear in the film.) You can hear Barry's changed approach most clearly in "Centrifuge and Corinne Put Down," where Barry follows the death of Corrine at the fangs of Drax's hunting dogs with a hypnotic, slow building piece using strings and harp and only culminating in the brass at the end. More typical suspense music appears in "Bond Smells a Rat" (which covers Bond sneaking into Drax's Venetian laboratory and seeing the effect of the nerve gas on Drax's employees).

The action cue most reminiscent of the earlier scores is in the first half of "Cable Car and Snake Fight," with exciting brass punctuation marks, but then it segues directly into the snake deathtrap music, where Barry again takes an unusual approach with the orchestration, focusing on lyrical action and tension music. The second half of "Bond Arrives in Rio and Boat Chase" sees the return of `007,' a piece of thrilling action music Barry first used in "From Russia, With Love," only here it is orchestrated to match the tone of the rest of the score; it's both beautiful and exiting, and a perfect example of how Barry could turn the expectations of action upside down.

But the real highlights of the album are "Bond Lured to Pyramid," "Space Laser Battle," and "Flight into Space," where Barry creates hypnotic and gorgeous musical suites. "Bond Lured to Pyramid" plays as Bond weaves through the jungle following a beautiful woman to Drax's lair; Barry uses a chorus and chirping woodwinds over a thick layer of strings to create a feeling of exoticism and mystery. (In the film, this cue leads directly into "Snake Fight.") "Space Laser Battle" takes the ridiculous laser duel between Drax's forces and the U.S. Space Marines (???) and makes a slow, lyrical dirge out of it -- a brilliant move on Barry's part that emphasizes the `space' aspect of the scene. "Flight into Space" is six and half-minutes of sustained beauty, and one of the greatest pieces Barry composed for any film: it's almost a complete ballet based on the theme of space travel, using a chorus, organ, and elegant trumpet and horn passages to create the portrait. The music for the emergence of the space station out of the darkness is especially stunning.

Yes, this isn't the longer album we hoped for. Perhaps one day the legal problems will be settled, but this is the best that EMI was able to do. And the remarkable score is still there and still as potent a piece of work as it ever wars. An essential album for all James Bond and John Barry fans.

A Beautiful and Esoteric Bond Score, February 26, 2003
Reviewer: B. King "gobirds2" (New Englnd) - See all my reviews
(TOP 100 REVIEWER) (REAL NAME)
This is rare music for a James Bond film. It is of great interest and curiosity just how John Barry scored this film. The score represented on the compact disc concentrates on the virtues of the main character, the spectacle and enigma of space and fleeting action sequences. It contains one of the most haunting and esoteric love themes that John Barry ever composed. Barry never reverts to or even hints to the "James Bond Theme" on this compact disc. He concentrates his score on the main character's endearing and enduring qualities. We can hear Bond as the romantic hero, spy and adventurer. We also hear the beautiful passages of earthly and unearthly encounters. Some of the score contains a yearning for the enigmatic meaning of life itself. It is a very unusual score for a film that has deep unfathomable undertones hidden beneath its gloss. This score matches the film perfectly because MOONRAKER is probably the most enigmatic film of the series covering the gamut of styles and tones. The digital remastering is good and it comes with a nice booklet.

Melodramatic Bond Score from John Barry, April 4, 2004
Reviewer: B. King "gobirds2" (New Englnd) - See all my reviews
(TOP 100 REVIEWER) (REAL NAME)
The OCTOPUSSY soundtrack seems a bit truncated but it is still a good John Barry - James Bond CD. The soundtrack to OCTOPUSSY seems not so much a mixture of styles but rather the ambiguous culmination of those styles. The suspense, exotic and romantic elements of the score are impressive. "That's My Little Octopussy" and "Bond Meets Octopussy" are very beautiful love pieces based on the main title: "All Time High" that are reminiscent to the true nature of "We Have All the Time In the World" from ON HER MAJESTY'S SECRET SERVICE. The character of Octopussy, played against formula, in this film seems like a genuine love interest of James Bond as is reflected in these pieces. Impressive too are "Bond At the Monsoon Palace" and "The Chase-Bomb Theme" reminiscent of Barry's scoring of some of his "cold war" films from the 1960s. In other parts of the score Barry seems to be tiring. His passion and penchant for scoring action scenes seems to be on the wane here. "Yo Yo Fight" and parts of "The Palace Fight" seem unimaginative and lackluster. Still, this soundtrack contains many tracks with elements of "The James Bond Theme" and this is where Barry seems to have compensated himself. "Bond Look-Alike" is a tour de force of the 007 mystique. "Bond Look-Alike" is a rich composition based on "The James Bond Theme" and is one of the best tracks to be found on any of the James Bond soundtracks. It is good to see that the original artwork was restored with Roger Moore in the traditional 007-tuxedo gun pose for this re-issue.

That's my little Octopussy!, February 21, 2003
Reviewer: "jmichael79" (Springfield, PA United States) - See all my reviews
I was pleased to get my hands on this reissue of a solid John Barry entery in the 007 series. The remastered cd sounds fantastic, though it does not include any bonus tracks. Also, it drops the qoutes from the film found on the first Rykodisk reissue. The score itself is a fine effort, though not as exciting as Barry's next two efforts ("A View to a Kill" and "The Living Daylights"). The real standout here is the love theme, "That's My Little Octopussy," a nice orchestral arrangement of the pleasent theme song "All Time High" by Rita Coolidge. The best of the action cues is "The Chase Bond Theme," elements of which Barry would incorporate into the next two, more action packed scores. If you're collecting the Bond score reissues, or even just the Barry albums, this is a no-brainer, especially if (like me) you missed the '97 Rykodisk album. Though I would have liked to have seen the score expanded with bonus tracks, "Octopussy" remains a fine album.

Track order, in case anyone wondered, March 2, 2003
Reviewer: James Luckard (Los Angeles, CA) - See all my reviews

A superb re-release of Barry's score. It's lucky that the albums which had elements available for remastering are, by and large, all of the best Bond scores.

Apparently, the tracks had to be kept in the original release order for contractual reasons. Anyway, in case anyone wants to make a CDR in the correct film order, here it is, matched up to my DVD,

13, 1, 14, 6, 9, 15-19, 4, 20, 3, 5, 8, 2, 11, 10, 12, 7, 21

A Barry Gem Rediscovered, February 19, 2003
Reviewer: G M. Stathis (cedar city, utah USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
In its original soundtrack form, on LP and later CD, John Barry's music for "Diamonds Are Forever" lost a good deal of its allure. So much of it was missing that one could not get a true feeling of what the full score was all about. This new recording from Capital/EMI/MGM is part of 40th Anniversary release of most of the 007 scores, and it is one the best so far. An attempt has been made to rescue music that is still available and previously missing on the soundtracks, in many cases restoring the full scores. This is not quite the full score, however. Music variously titled "Blofeld's Laser" seems to be missing, but that said, this is another gem for James Bond and John Barry fans. With this recording one is tempted to suggest that this is easily one of the top five 007 soundtracks. Several new tracks are listed, but note many of the "standard" cuts include never before recorded music, including the full theatrical version of the vocal "Diamonds Are Forever." There are also some alternate tracks which are quite good. A solid recording and nicely packaged. Again, the price is astounding...well done! This recording is especially worthy of the James Bond Anniversary and should, along with some of the other releases, contribute to a Bond and Barry renaissance.

"Well, that's a neat trick....", November 26, 2005
Reviewer: The JuRK (The Desert) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)
Sean Connery's first return to the role of James Bond still sparks a lot of discussion among the 007 fans. Was DIAMONDS the first "camp" Bond film, as evidenced by the light touches and wild theatrics (gay hit men! Blofeld showing up in drag!)? Or was it still a dangerous spy thriller where Bond is nearly cremated alive and when he backhands Tiffany with his tie to get answers?

It's actually somewhere in between, I think, and that's why the movie is still cool after all these years.

John Barry produces another solid 007 soundtrack to give DIAMONDS its own feel and personality. My only quibble would be that the tracks are not in order but I understand from other reviews that they couldn't contractually produce it any other way. Maybe someday.

Everyone looked like they were having a good time in this movie, and it comes through the music as well. This is one of the CDs I always have in my car during my frequent trips to Vegas.

wonderful CD, February 5, 2004
Reviewer: COMPUTERJAZZMAN "computerjazzman" (Cliffside Park, New Jersey United States) - See all my reviews
John Barry really outdid himself with this beautiful soundtrack to accompany everybody's favorite superspy, James Bond, on his latest mission. Beautiful arrangements and melodies, the music evokes so many different moods, so you know it is powerful...even though I am a big fan of all of the original James Bond movies (the ones with Sean Connery), it's funny how I remember the soundtrack to this movie better than I rememeber the actual plot! If you like this kind of music, then you should get all of the John Barry scores from all of the Bond movies, as well as picking up the Hugo Montenegro CD's (Man from U.N.C.L.E., More Music from Man from U.N.C.L.E., Come Spy With Me, Girl from U.N.C.L.E.), as well as the swingin' Count Basie CD "Basie Meets Bond".

I've given the film order for some other expanded Bond CDs, but I didn't have the DVD of this film. It turns out that making a CD in the correct order is a bit difficult, as you have to slice and dice various tracks. I did it, however, and it is well worth the time invested.

Good 007 Soundtrack , October 26, 2005
Reviewer: balthazarbork - See all my reviews
This is a good James Bond soundtrack. It would seem that David Arnold got his inspiration for TOMORROW NEVER DIES from John Barry's score for YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE. I like this soundtrack because you get a lot of the James Bond Theme on it now that it has been restored. You also get a really good dose of the 007 Theme as well.

Finally after thirty eight years we can now listen to all of the music. John Barry's score to this Bond outing was magical! It captures elements of the culture of Japan where the movie was filmed and the action scores are absolutely exciting. Bond fans, your wait is over. This is the one you want to have in your collection
