I didn't like this book anywhere near as much as I might have expected given my interest in the subject area. I found the writing rather dry and confusing, despite the author's obvious enthusiasm for his subject matter. In addition, the obvious problem is that this is not really a book about the battle of Fulford as not enough is known about the conflict to compose a full length book. It is really a book about the last few decades of Anglo-Saxon England.
There were also a few inconsistencies show more that were annoying, for example Ethelred's age is stated as perhaps ten in 978, then he is said to be in his early twenties in 985. On P94 it says twice that Earl Siward had only one son, then says that he had another soon who was too young to succeed him. You can see what the author is getting at, but this kind of sloppy wording just irritates. show less
