Brilliant compilation of some of the funniest and most insightful thoughts and observations of the people living in NSW at the beginning of the 19th Century. Engrossing, informative, revealing, it provides a vivid picture of our ancestors and what they did to survive the harsh life and each other in the society that was forming roughly 20 years after European settlement. The book is divided into subjects of general interest, rather than a blow-by-blow run of letters and notices. [A show more chronological run can be viewed in the reproductions in print or film; hopefully they will be fully available on-line and on DVD one day]. Humour, disputes, orders, tragedies, plans, food, agriculture, viticulture, livestock, climate, behaviour, education, health and hygiene, we have it all in this wonderful work and its sibling, Volume 2 (1810-1821). show less
