Jane Collier (1) (1714–1755)

Jane Collier was the daughter of the metaphysical philosopher and clergyman Rev. Arthur Collier, Rector of Langford Magna in Wiltshire. With her sister, she was taught Greek and Latin. After the death of their father in 1732 left the family in straitened financial circumstances, the author Sarah Fielding encouraged her friend Jane to write for a living. Jane's first published work was the social satire An Essay on the Art of Ingeniously Tormenting (1753) which was followed by The Cry: A New Dramatic Fable (1754), co-written with Sarah Fielding. Jane Collier never married and died in London.
