- Anne Warner French was a pen name of Anne Richmond Warner. By marriage, she became Mrs. Charles Ellis French. Born in St. Paul, Minnesota, she spent most of her writing career in England. She was a popular author in her day. Although she expressed a fondness for the USA, she considered Americans too provincial and preferred the company of Englishwomen, whom she called more “broad-minded in their views of life.” Her most popular works were the humorous Susan Clegg stories.
