1933 Spain: A Nation Comes of Age, by Robert Graham (read 21 June 1985) The author of this book was a British news correspondent in Spain from 1977 to 1982. It is not a profound book, but it tells a lot about Spain since Franco's death in 1975. The attempted coup of 23 Feb 1981 is discussed, and looked on as a key event showing the maturity of democracy in Spain. I am pleased Cardinal Tarancon of Madrid was the head of the Spanish Episcopate from 1971 to 1979; the Church sufficiently show more disassociated itself from Franco in time. But there are surely a lot of non-democratic things yet in Spain. The press and TV are prime examples of limited freedoms. An interesting book--first book on Spain I've read since 15 Nov 1981, when I read Anti-Clericalism: Conflict Between Church and State in France, Italy, and Spain, by J. Selwyn Schapiro. show less
