Unleashed was one of my favorite expansions and this book was absolutely useful in getting a better feel and understanding of how pets work in the Sims (though I will say that I still prefer my two IRL cats to the virtual ones, haha) The game did show pet behavior fairly accurately (for a game, that is) with dogs pooping on the floor or digging holes, or gophers invading your garden (yes, cats and dogs were not the only animals introduced to this game!)
I have mixed feelings about this expansion. Don't get me wrong, this book is great for knowing the ins and outs of the magic aspects of the Sims game, and this was also the final expansion to the Sims games.
Some of the magic spells in this game, particularly the Friendship Boost spell, came in really handy with earlier expansions of the game, such as boosting the amount of friends (or Star Points) you needed to advance along the career track, either for a regular job or for being a show more superstar.
At the same time, i am happy that this was the final expansion for the Sims 1. If you want to give these games a try, go for the Sims Complete Collection, which has all 8 of the games rolled into one nice bundle. Since the expansions gave many different aspects of the game to explore, you can choose which ones your characters focus on.

The Sims House Party: Prima's Official Strategy Guide: House Party - Official Strategy Guide by Mark Cohen
Throw the most rocking house party with this Guide! Seriously, the expansions could get pretty crazy sometimes, and these guides were an absolute help. (this was in the early 2000's, where cheats and tips and the like weren't as easily found on the Internet)
