Although this book seems to promote lifestyle changes (diet, excercise, etc.) that don't really seem to have evidence of helping or curing the disease, it does provide an up-close look at the effects of Alzheimer's on a marriage, and gives readers an idea of what they can expect if they find themselves facing the dreaded disease.
This is a personal account of dealing with Alzheimer’s disease. The husband writes most of the book with some small sections written by B. Smith, who is afflicted with the disease. The book provides much insight into the caregiving required and the symptoms of the disease. Dan also discusses some about research in the area. The book is clearly an effort to inform the public and encourage funding of research on Alzheimer’s disease. I found the book informative. It is one sided considering show more the many prevalent diseases. show less
An important contribution to literature about Alzheimer's, particularly given the high profile of B. Smith, and because African-American stories are underrepresented in the popular narrative of American Alzheimer's. Captures the mild-to-moderate phases of Alzheimer's of Smith and her husband Gasby, primarily from Gasby's perspective as caregiver. An important addition to collections. Highly recommended. memoir/coping with alzheimer's (mostly from husband's POV). very readable and great for boosting awareness of this common disease (treatment of which could be well in grasp if only for more awareness and funding).
