- Oxford dictionary of national biography, via WWW, June 11, 2014 |b (Buchanan, Robert (1802-1875); Free Church of Scotland minister; educated at Universities of Glasgow (1817-20) and Edinburgh (1820-25); licensed as a preacher in the Church of Scotland in 1825; as a result of the Disruption of 1843, Buchanan left the Church of Scotland and helped to form the Free Church of Scotland; became convener of the Sustenation Fund in 1847 and held that position for almost 30 years; leading figure in the movement to reunite the several presbyterian denominations of Scotland; supported the campaign to disestablish the Church of Scotland after 1872; served as moderator of the Free Church general assembly in 1860)
