Short biography
Since 1992, Gene Thorp has been designing and producing maps under the name Cartographic Concepts Incorporated. Throughout the 1990s he worked as a designer for several well known Baltimore-Washington area graphics firms. In the fall of 2000, Thorp joined the staff of full time cartographers at The Washington Post newspaper and there has been responsible for creating maps which range in size and complexity from simple locators to intricate, data intensive double truck spreads. The variety of subject matter he has mapped includes war, elections, natural disasters, disease, business, history, crime, accidents and just about anything else you can think of. His work at the Post has won him numerous international design awards. In the fall of 2015, Thorp joined the cartographic staff or the U.S. State Department, Office of the Geographer. [Website]
