Etienne Bloch (1921–2009)

Étienne Bloch was born in Strasbourg, France, the eldest son of historian and resistance fighter Marc Bloch and his wife Simone Vidal. He was the grandson of Gustave Bloch, a professor of ancient history at the Sorbonne. During World War II, Étienne Bloch distributed the clandestine newspapers Liberté and Combat for the French Resistance, then joined the Free French Forces and fought in the 2nd Armored Division. After the war, he became an historian and a magistrate. He devoted many years of his life to publishing his father's unpublished texts and various works about him. His books in French and English included La Face cachée du procès Barbie (The Hidden Face of the Barbie Trial), with Jacques Vergès, 1983; Marc Bloch: A Life in History (with Carol Fink, 1991); Jews in France During World War II (with Renée Poznanski, 2001); Marc Bloch: L'histoire, la guerre, la résistance (Marc Bloch: History, War, Resistance, with Annette Becker, 2006); Marc Bloch, Histoire et Historiens (Marc Bloch, History and Historians: texts reunited by Étienne Bloch, 1995).
