As always the memoirs of a defector, often ghost written and preapproved are worth looking at to study motivation, but are flawed and have a primary purpose of propaganda in their own right and a way to provide funds for information received. Read them cautiously. Nevertheless and important defection. Or was it a deception?
An autobiography of a WWII double agent code name Tricycle whose life may have inspired Ian Fleming to create James Bond. By publishing The Double-Cross System in 1974, J. C. Masterman cracked the Official Secrets Act door, allowing the greatest spy ever, Dusko Popov, to publish his memoirs two years later.
