In 1957, a woman in the small Polish town of Bodzentyn found some exercise books in a garbage heap: the diary of Dawid Rubinowicz. Dawid was twelve years old when he began his notes in 1940, in the middle of the war. Because he was Jewish, he was no longer allowed to go to school. But courageously he wrote down what happened to him and to the other Jews during that terrible time. This was his resistance against the Germans, this was how he fought against fear, this was how he preserved his human dignity in the midst of horror and death. In June 1942, Dawid's records break off. A short time later, he was murdered with his parents and siblings in the German extermination camp Treblinka. This documentary retraces the Jewish child's footsteps, following his diary entries. What is impressive is the care and simplicity with which Dawid writes about his experiences and feelings during this terrible time of the German occupation of Poland. These records, dictated by reality itself, have high documentary value. They are carefully supplemented in the film by photographs, film documents and present-day footage of the landscape in which Dawid lived. show less
