Marya Zaturenska was born in Kiev and emigrated with her family to the USA as a child. An outstanding student at night school despite having to work in a factory by day, she won a college scholarship to Valparaiso University in Indiana and later transferred to the University of Wisconsin at Madison. In 1925, she married Horace Gregory, a poet and literary critic. Zaturenska was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 1938 for her collection of lyric verse entitled Cold Morning Sky.
