About the Author
Latin American scholar and historian James Scobie was born in Valparaiso, Chile. The son of an educator and banker, he was educated at Princeton University and Harvard University, receiving his Ph.D. from the latter in 1954. In addition to teaching at Indiana University and the University of show more California at San Diego, Scobie was active in the Latin American Studies Association and the Pacific Coast Council on Latin American Studies. The primary focus of his work has been Argentina, and his published works include Argentina: A City and a Nation (1964), Revolution on the Pampas (1964), and Buenos Aires:From Plaza to Suburb (1974). Between 1967--69 and 1980--81, Scobie was the advisory editor of the Latin American Research Review. He was awarded a Guggenheim fellowship in 1967--68. (Bowker Author Biography) show less
