I knew nothing about Keke Palmer and her character Lady Miss Jacqueline until I started this series. I saw it was also by Jasmine Guillory, who writes fantastic books and it was also on Kindle Unlimited. It was a win-win because this story is hilarious.

This is the first in the Southern Belle Insults series of short stories and it is laugh out loud funny. Lady Miss Jacqueline certainly does not hold anything back when it comes to delivering insults, most of them directed at poor Janet. Janet show more has to be one of the most boring, beige characters to hit the page and nothing ever seems to go right for her. But fortunately help is on its way thanks to Lady Miss Jacqueline who spices up the story with her commentary and leads Janet towards a life-changing, magical wig. After that? Well, that’s a different story.

The story is a quick read at 25 pages, so just right for a work break or a single sitting. It is truly entertaining and has stayed with me since I finished the story! I can’t wait to see what happens to poor Janet – but I’m guessing she won’t be described that way once that wig gets on her head! There are five stories in this series, and I’m looking forward to having fun reading them (and adding some of Lady Miss Jacqueline’s insults to my armamentarium).

I chose this because it sounded like a light and humourous read. I soon saw plenty of myself in Janet and looked forward to something good happening for her. But almost the whole of this first part of the series was basically a character assassination of poor Janet, with no sympathy or empathy. Obviously there is a lot more to the story but instead of finding it funny I found it increasingly irritating. I'm not sure if I'll continue with this series. It's too much the old-fashioned idea that show more introversion is something that needs to be 'fixed'. show less
Master of Me
The Secret to Controlling Your Narrative

I Picked Up This Book Because: Celebrity memoirs are my jam, #14Books14Weeks

Media Type: Audiobook
Source: BC Public Library
Dates Read: 8/7/25 - 8/8/25
Rating: 3 Stars
Narrator(s): Keke Palmer

The Story:

This was more self-help, life coach than celebrity memoir. Yes, she spoke about her family and their closeness and her son, but she spoke more about building a brand and how she used that brand to transform from child star to Hollywood star.
I'm not sure how I feel about this story, it's very short and on Prime reading for free, so if you have that, it's worth a few minutes of time. Apparently there are 5 short stories in a series, I may check out the others to see if the story develops in a satisfying way.
The narrator talks about our main character with a lot of derision, and like the subtitle suggests, southern insults, I guess?--a lot of name-dropping, and seems self-absorbed, and sorry for this poor, misguided person, who is show more supposedly her dear friend.
The way it ends, some things slot into place, but I'm still not sure if that makes it "good" so we shall see, if I continue.
