4749. The Manner Is Ordinary, by John LaFarge, S. J. (read 12 Sep 2010) This is a 1954 autobiography by the famed Jesuit who was an editor of America magazine. He tells in detail of his life before he he became a Jesuit, and of his famed parents. He was ordained at 25 after studying at Innsbruck. He did pastoral work in St Mary's County, Maryland and in the 1920's was moved to America magazine, where he was editor for many years. While some of what he discusses is no longer of immediate show more interest, I found the book an enjoyable book to read, and the Church he describes is the Church which I grew up in. He even mentions in passing my home town of Earling, Iowa. A great book by a great man. He was born in 1880 and died in 1963 show less
