I Love You, Little One: A High-Contrast Baby Book (Black-and-White Tummy Time Book for Visual Stimulation) by Becca Thorne
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher, Zeitgeist (Z Kids) for this DRC in exchange for a fair and honest review. The thoughts and opinions expressed below are my own.
This high contrast board book celebrates the deep love between a parent and their newborn, using moving language to express the deep love that they have for them. The text spotlights the depth of the parents love by comparing it to the expanse of space and the depth of the ocean, simultaneously celebrating the things that show more make each baby special.
My experience with high-contrast books is generally hit or miss, but I like the overall design of this one. The illustrations have a strong, clear outline and are reminiscent of woodblock prints or embroidered motifs on the edge of linens. They're also (due in part to the color scheme) vaguely reminiscent of pysanky, which make them even more appealing. My favorites include the ship sailing through the stars, the father and child dancing underneath the moon, and the baby in their cradle, dreaming of moonbeams and various other things. The book description says that it will be styled in accordion format so that it can stretch with babies while they're on the floor, which I would like to see. show less

Thank you to Zeitgeist for this ARC in exchange for my honest review!
Although I don’t have a baby myself, I was curious about I Love You, Little One and how it’s designed for early readers and caregivers. The book’s minimal color palette immediately caught my attention, and I learned that these colors are actually chosen to align with what babies can recognize as their vision develops, making it a thoughtful design choice for shared reading.
The show more illustrations have a charming, handcrafted feel, resembling carved and inked stamp art printed onto paper. The text flows naturally within the artwork and is easy to read aloud. My favorite illustration was the tree illustration, where the narrator talks about their love for many things related to their baby, and with the tree, regarding the way the baby grows.
Most of the images depict a mother and baby, emphasizing tenderness and bonding. It would be interesting to see maybe an illustration with a dad and the baby too, but I can see why it's women. While it’s a very short read, that makes sense given its probable intended format is a small, thick board book for babies.
I Love You, Little One is a gentle, beautifully made book that nurtures early visual and emotional development while celebrating the love between parent and child. show less
