The year is 1722. Elijah, Klaus, and Rebekah have fled, from Mikael their father who is hell-bent on killing them, to the new world. They try in New Orleans to build up a new life and have the past nine years lying low not really being able to settle in a town that is ruled by witches and werewolves. But everything is about to change. Vivianne, born of a mother who is a witch and a father who was a werewolf is betrothed to a werewolf to establish a union between witches and the werewolves show more that should bring peace between them. But then Klaus sets his eyes on Vivianne and the union is in jeopardy.

This is without a doubt a book written for the fans of the tv-series The Originals, if you don’t like the show or has not even heard of the Mikaelsons then you probably won’t like it as much as a fan of the show. Like me, who loved the book! I can’t remember the last time I read a book with such an enjoyment that the time just flew by and suddenly the book is over and I just wanted more, but there isn’t anymore because the last 8 % of the book is just the first part of the next book (that I want pronto!) and now I’m sad because it was so good.

I mean it had instalove and everything and I bought it. Sure Rebekah falls way too soon, but that is part of her character, she has never been very lucky when it comes to men. Seeing Klaus in love was more of a surprise, but it worked also. Elijah, as usual, is the one trying to stay level headed and keep his brother away from problems, but as always, Klaus is a loose cannon and Elijah will always put his family before anything. Was the ending predictable? Yes, but I didn’t mind that either. Damn, I just sucked up the story like a sponge sucking up water.

Thank you Netgalley for providing me with a free copy for an honest review!

I have not seen the television series for this book or even the Vampire Diaries which this show is a spin off of. Yet, I was curious to read the book and learn about what this show was all about. So having not seen the show it did take me a little bit to get the logistics of who was who and the Mikaelson family background. Once I did get this straight, then I was able to read the book.

In the beginning I was not vibing too well with Rebekah. I found her vindictive and she just rubbed me the show more wrong way. Yet the more that I got to know her and her falling for Eric helped me to better get where she was coming from and warm up to her. Right away I liked Elijah. HE was the cool tempered one and the most mature of the three. So I could relate to him. Klaus is the sexy one. The ladies' man.

However this book did have the "CW" feel to it. If you have watched any shows on the CW network then you get what I am saying. Not that there is anything wrong with this as I watch many other shows on this network. What I mean by this is what there was a mild approach to the vampires, werewolves, witches, and even the violence in the story. Like PG-13 rating. Now that I have read this book, I will have to check out the show.

At the time when I read the first book in this trilogy, I was only semi interested in Klaus, Elijah and Rebekah Mikaelson. I had heard about the television series but had not watched it. Since than I have checked this show out and absolutely love it. I was hooked from the first episode. I think that Klaus, Elijah, and Rebekah all balance each other out very nicely. Even though they may be a very dysfunctional family, they truly do have each other's backs.

My favorite of the three Mikaelsons' show more has to be Klaus. Yes, he is the ultimate bad boy but I feel for him. I feel that he is misunderstood. Partly due to the fact that if he was to let his guard down, he would feel something and show that he might actually have a heart. Now, after reading this book I have a better understanding of just who Klaus is and why he has a wall up. If I had to compare Vivianne Lescheres to someone in the television series, I would say that she is a little bit like Camille. In the way that Camille has a little bit of a hold on Klaus. When she needs something, he does not think twice. Although, I did not only knew Vivianne for a short while, I felt the love between she and Klaus. Fans of the television series will enjoy this book. show less
Based on the Vampire Diaries, this is the second book involving the Mikaelson siblings; the original vampires. This is set in New Orleans in the early 1800s and involves what someone will do in the name of love and the consequences of using magic in an unnatural way.

When agreeing to read this book, I had not been aware this was tied to the Vampire Diaries TV series, or that this was the second book in this offshoot. I did learn this prior to actually reading it and yes, it’s obvious that a show more book came before it. But I found this story easy to follow and don’t believe my lack of knowledge in any way affected my enjoyment of the story.

It’s not an especially complex story, but it does involve not just the vampires but also witches and werewolves, with the story told from the points of view of the vampire siblings; Klaus, Elijah and Rebekah.

I found this to be both an easy read and an engaging story with plenty of action. And as I mentioned, it’s not necessary to be aware of this world or these characters before reading this book.

I read this from an ARC, which also contains the first 3 chapters of the next book.
