- Short biography
- Matthew Prior served in various political and diplomatic posts under King William III and Queen Anne I of England. His role in the negotiations for the Treaty of Utrecht was so significant that his political opponents the Whigs derisively called it "Matt's Peace." After the Whigs regained power in 1714, he was imprisoned for two years but continued to write poetry.
