Excellent 3-part series. I thoroughly enjoyed this trilogy. Quite entertaining and unpredictable. Tesar is a masterful storyteller and has me hooked. The story kept me fully engaged the entire time. Full of adventure, awesome battle scenes reminiscient of The Lord of the Rings, and mystery surrounding certain dark characters. I can visualize an entire film being made from this wonderful novel. However, the ending of the story was hugely disappointing. It left a lot of unanswered questions show more open. For instance, who were the modern men with computers, guns, cigars, boats, trucks, etc. mentioned several times throughout the story? And, where was Kael headed off to at the end of the story? Who precisely was Kael? What is the Awakened? The story ended too abruptly, setting us up for a fourth book I suppose. But, after this much reading I was ready for some closure. I guess I'll have to stay tuned for Book 4, but how long will these questions go unanswered? Nevertheless, it was an excellent novel that comes highly recommended to those who especially enjoy great battle scenes, mysterious creatures, unpredictable story lines, imaginary places, and moving drama. show less
This book started out well, and it was a very interesting premise, but the author lost me at a few critical points. The first was that time jumps happened frequently, and with no announcement except in the next paragraph. I don't like books that leave me jumping around trying to guess what it is I'm reading, and when it takes place. The storyline was a unique one, and I found myself becoming personally invested in especially the story of Kael and Maeryn, but the other characters weren't so show more memorable for me. Too many things were left unanswered, leaving more questions than anything. show less
I enjoyed this book as I thought it was a good start to a story but I think I’ll need to read the other two books for it to make total sense, and for me to get a sense of closure of the characters, and the incomplete story lines. I originally choose the book as the blurb appealed to me, and as a free download, I had nothing to lose. There were some elements of the story that were better than others, but I did like the maps at the back of the book which helped me make sense of the places show more that the author was describing. Overall the book left me wanting to know what was going to happen to the characters and I did buy the second book straight away so that I could continue reading. As I’ve said, this book doesn’t work as a standalone novel, because it isn’t. The second and third parts of the book are fairly cheap so think of it as a free introduction, that you can give up on if it doesn’t appeal. Would I recommend this book? Well, if you like a bit of fantasy, and if it is still free on Amazon, (or your book seller of choice) then yes. Would I have paid for this book? Actually, yes I would. It was a good debut novel. show less
My interest is piqued. I do believe I will have to check out at least the next book, as, based on the description for this book, only a very small part of the story has been covered. Well, actually it's really only just past the beginning of the story: in my opinion, this book ends just after the transition to the rising action (if it's to follow the dramatic arc).
