Ernest J.Simmons, Memoirs of a station master (1879).Bath : Adams and Dart, 1974. For anyone who travels the railway lines of Oxfordshire , this is a brilliant book. Puzzle Junction, Jam Jam Junction and Snorum (Oxford) are still there. There are some great stories. The man who asked the porter what the name of the station was and got the reply `Ino'. `You may know but I don't', came the reply. `What is the name of the station?' `Ino'. And it was Aynho. Then there was the lady who had not show more been on a train before and was scared out of her wits. She went one stop up the line, changed trains and discovered that she was back at the station she had started from. An excellent insight into railways of the 19th century by someone who worked on them. show less
