I didn't really like this book for my ELL student. Though it was pretty interesting I think if it is to be used it has to be used as a shared reading. My student did not pick up on the pattern the book offered and I see why because I barely did. It was also hard to use pictures to come up with what the unknown words might be because when I'd point to the picture and ask the child what the arrows were pointing to they'd say they didn't know because it was a part of the caterpillars anatomy, show more not an easy word they could guess. I think this book may work for some students, but it didn't work for mine. show less
This wonderfully illustrated book is the perfect guide for your child when discovering their first Caterpillar and or butterfly. It simplifies the life cycle of a Caterpillar for children and through colorful pictures shows a Caterpillar becoming a butterfly. The book is full of information as it introduces children to new words such as eucalyptus and cocoon. I would reccomend this book to any child about to venture to their first butterfly garden or who is beginning a butterfly garden of show more their own. show less
This book was about the life cycle of a caterpillar. I really liked this book for multiple reasons; it can be used as a pattern book, the images show a close up of how caterpillars hatch and grow, and it labels each frame! Personally, I think this book should be used as a guided reading book because there are some big vocabulary words that some students may have difficulty reading without any guidance. With that being said, I do enjoy how each page only has a short sentence describing what show more stage the caterpillar was at. show less
This text will be a great guided reading tool because it shows the natural steps of a caterpillar's life as a science topic. The vocabulary can enhance my student's word bank and the imagery of the larvae, cocoon and butterfly can really draw the students' attention as they read it for themselves. It can be tied to life cycles that people have to go through sometimes in order to arrive at a point in their lives. Patience and endurance is something we can all learn from the caterpillar.
