A mini-series of four episodes, with a clever mixture of contemporary feel despite 18th century costumes and sets. Romola Garai is excellent, portraying Emma as self-centred and unaware of other people's feelings, yet considerably nicer than Austen's original.

Nearly four hours allows for a good pace, with plenty of attractive scenery, and no rushed feeling at social events. Some of the people are caricatured, of course, but we really liked Knightley, played by Jonny Lee Miller, and Michael show more Gambon as Mr Woodhouse.

Purists might object to some changes, and the style; but we thought it was excellent, and very absorbing. I don't much like the book, but loved this mini-series. Definitely recommended.

Flawless performances turn this saga of three men with a lot of trouble on their hands--in two cases due to their own shortcomings--into a compelling drama aided by nice London settings such as Battersea Park. Well worth watching.
