Charles and Lucy Hamilton live on an isolated English island. Charles is a moderately well-known artist, Lucy is his former muse. Their marriage is complex and difficult, at least it seemed so to me. A stranger, Benedict, comes to stay with them (through connections with Charles' gallery owner), and Lucy becomes obsessed with Benedict. He's beautiful, sensual and very young, but probably gay and most definitely a liar, or at least someone who likes to make up stories about his own life. The show more relationship between Charles and Lucy never really rang true to me, even as a relationship which has eroded to a listless formality. It still seemed unlikely. And I also never understood what Lucy saw in Benedict, unless it was merely a diversion from her dull life. This was one of those books that reads easily, but leaves you feeling somewhat unsettled and with an empty feeling. Isn't there more? show less
I listened to 1/4 of this, but I couldn't tell you what it is about except that it was about schoolboys who form a secret society.
Jon Cartwright is the narrator and his sonorous voice was so quick to lull me to sleep (wonderful) or off on a tangential thought.
Not the usual novel to find on Hoopla. And, as an audiobook, it isn't in any other of my libraries.
