A curious work which covers a large number of topics. I understand that the original has many repetitive sections, but Dilke, the editor and translator worked diligently to present the actual information in the work. The illustrations are drawn from the larger number extant in the original, and do not on balance portray the Spanish conquerors in a favourable light. The translation reads as well as could be expected, but of course I do not read either Spanish or Quechan, both languages being show more present in the original. The reader will be presented with many unfamiliar names, and some of the less desirable customs of the Incas are shown as well as massive Spanish corruption. The historical information sometimes differs from the account in Garcilaso de la Vega's book. Written sometime between 1567 and 1615, an English translation had to await Mr. Dilke's efforts from 1972 to 1977. It is a considerable addition to our understanding of the largest native American society. show less
