After a brief term in the pastorate, Howie joined the faculty of Dallas Theological Seminary, where he taught for 60 years, founding the Department of Christian Education and the Center for Christian Leadership. He served on the boards of many Christian organizations. He was also involved in the founding of Pine Cove Christian Camps. A number of his books have become classroom texts, such as Living By The Book, Teaching To Change Lives, As Iron Sharpens Iron, and Color Outside The Lines, among others. For several years his voice was heard on the radio through the nationally syndicated program, The Art of Family Living. For eight years he served his friend Tom Landry as chaplain of the Dallas Cowboys.

Hendricks writes both for the theologian and the novice Bible reader. He's clear, simple, and profoundly helpful in understanding how to appropriately read the Bible in the context of its original audience and meaning. This book was required reading for my seminary courses and, thus, I assumed it would be lofty in its presentation. However, Hendricks has a knack for making what would otherwise be complex ideas quite simple and accessible to every reader, regardless of age, background, or show more education. I highly recommend this book both for the avid studier of the Bible and for the curious lay reader of the Bible. show less

Howard Hendrick is such a wise sage package in simple language. This book is a masterpiece. It tells us how to read the Bible, to better understand and appreciate God's Word. If you ever want to learn about how to take a deeper dive into Scriptures, this book is the best roadmap.
Hendricks has written a gem containing valuable information on how a person can become a more dynamic teacher. Among the important points the author covers include:
1. If you stop growing today, you stop teaching tomorrow.
2. Convince your students that you believe in them!
3. Maximum learning is the result of maximum involvement.
4. Preparation is the key to good communication.
5. The teacher's character, compassion, and content are what motivates the learner the most.
6. Teaching and learning show more are most effective when both teacher and learner are prepared.
7. The teacher needs to be creative in the ways learners are motivated.
8. Tension is an important part of the learning process.
While Hendricks writes from the viewpoint of a seminary professor, anyone involved in any kind of teaching environment will greatly benefit from the book.

Must read for any believer. Strong book on how to do Bible study. Read it 20 years ago and enjoyed it both times.
