This charming rendition of the well-known, nonsensical children’s rhyme, complete with humorous, full-page illustrations, is perfect for parents and children to enjoy together. Young readers will enjoy following the old man’s delightful adventures as the story unfolds.

For the musically inclined, the entire song, with music, is included at the end of the story.

Highly recommended.
This is a picture book written around the rhyme about an old man who is snoring. It takes him through all seasons and through all types of weather. He experiences many different things such as being chased by bees, falling in a well and getting ants in his pants.

I thought this was a wonderfully illustrated book. The pictures by Rob Gilbert were colorful, funny and entertaining. I have the heard the simple rhyme many times before but the added verses were very enjoyable for me.

This book could show more be used in a lesson about weather by showing the pictures of the different conditions and how they might affect us. The rhyme would help them remember. As another extension, by using the illustrations as an example, each child could draw their own picture of the current weather condition. show less
Summary: This is a story about an old man that was in bed snoring when it was raining and pouring outside. When he got up he fell down and he bumped his head. The story goes through several seasons where funny things happen to the old man, like ants in his pants when he tries to take a picnic, or when he fell down a well. Although crazy things are always happening to hm, the old man believes the he has a good day if he makes it to bed without bumping his head.

Personal reflection: This is show more another book that I remember from childhood so I loved reading it again. I read it to my boys and they loved it as well. I think that the rhyming makes it a great book for children to read. I actually had a hard time just reading it and not singling it because I am so used to singing the song.

Extension ideas:
1. In the classroom, the teacher could teach the children the song that goes with the story.
2. She could also have the children come up with different crazy things that may happen to the old man through the different seasons.
