Meticulously researched history of the early seal hunt in Newfoundland. The seals were killed for lamp oil and lubricating oil for machinery. The skin trade came after. The research looks at the social and economic dependency of engaging in this brutal culling, the role of technology and the heavy loss of life by seals and humans out on the ice before 1914. The mark this activity, considered almost an indigenous right by older Newfoundlanders, is needed to understand the resistance to animal show more rights activists in the 1970s. Illustrated. Indexed.
