Immediately following the events of Batman (2022), in which a catastrophe befell Gotham City and a vacuum was created in the city's mafia command with the death of Carmine Falcone, the mood is one of despair, but also of opportunity, especially in the eyes of the thug Oz Cobb (Colin Farrell) who, despite working for the city's most famous mafia family, wants more and more power. In turn, the Falcone family tries to establish a quick succession with Alberto Falcone (Michael Zegen), Carmine's show more son, at the same time as his sister Sofia Falcone (Cristin Milioti) leaves Arkham after years of prison in which she was convicted of killing several women by hanging.
This is a great move by Max/Warner, which once again brings a character with both feet in reality, who walks like a penguin due to a deformity in his leg, whose grotesque appearance causes repulsion in people, who is ridiculed by his criminal peers but who has above-average intelligence and an immense thirst for power, capable of heinous acts, without any scruples, conscience or morals. I love Danny DeVito's character in Batman Returns (1992), but he only works in the dreamlike universe of Tim Burton's film. I dare say that the Penguin here played by an impeccable Colin Farrell under kilos of makeup rivals the Joker created by Heath Ledger in Batman: The Dark Knight (2008).
In his wake is Cristin Milioti, who makes her Sofia Falcone a volcano of rebellion and punishment. The actress is a delight.
This television gem is produced by Colin Farrell himself, Matt Reeves (director of the 2022 film) and Craig Zobel, producer and director of another series that is a gem and deserves to be seen by those who enjoy a good detective mystery, Mare of Easttown (2021) with Kate Winslet.
Penguin is captivating, has episodes that leave a lump in your throat, sheds light on one of the most iconic characters in the Batman universe, adds a Sofia Falcone who brings out dubious feelings and has a sad and heavy ending, even surprising, which further exposes the pain and villainy of the characters. show less
