I had mixed opinions about this book. Because it is strictly an informational book, it is not something that a person would read for “fun” or for “entertainment”. This book should strictly be used for gaining information about a specific topic, in this case the Chinese and how they came to North America. This book would be a fabulous resource for students if/when they are doing a project on the Chinese or on different cultures within the United States or North America. Because this show more book doesn’t have a storyline, it may be hard for readers to read it in one sitting and take all of the information in at once. But that is why the book is spaced and divided into different sections and chapters that focus on one aspect of the Chinese coming to North America. For example, there are chapters/sections titled “A Proud Heritage”, “Land of Opportunity”, “Chinese or North American?” and “Here to Stay” along with many others! These chapter/section titles allow the students/readers to see what they will be reading about pertaining to the topic of the Chinese coming to North America. In addition to these divisions in the text/information, there are features such as photos, captions, bolded words/vocabulary and a glossary that aid the students/readers in comprehending the plethora of information. For example, whenever there is a bolded word within part of the text and a student doesn’t quite understand the meaning of it, they can turn to the glossary in the back of the book and read the direct definition for clarification! This book can be extremely helpful to students working on historical assignments or working on pulling key details and main ideas from informational texts! show less
