I was prepared to tell Timothy Young to leave the muffin books to Numeroff, but I am glad I read before I judged. To be honest, I’m not the biggest fan of the “If you give” books, but Timothy has changed my mind. His cantankerous puffin absolutely does not eat muffins, he doesn’t like being in a story, and his crayons can run away. Absolutely loved this book.
I Hate Picture Books! is one of the most adorable stories I've read in a long time. Max is tired of his picture books and ready to throw them away! Why? Well, they just keep getting him in trouble. Like the time he tried to draw on the wall like that Harold kid. Or the time he ate green ham. That didn't end well! However as he slowly remembers all the books he loves, he realizes just how important they really are to him.
I loved that Timothy Young pays homage to some of the most popular show more picture books out there. Adults, and the young readers they share this book with, are sure find some favorites in Max's story. The best part is definitely the illustrations though. Young uses bright colors and vivid pen strokes. The pictures come to life on their own, and weave a giggle-worthy story
The humor is sweet, the message is simple, and this is the type of book that is sure to become a fast favorite! Just keep your little one away from the fridge and any green ham. Ha. Too cute! show less

This is a sweet and laugh-inducing adventure. Give the puffin a muffin, and the most unexpected thing happens...or not really. The question of whether puffins even eat muffins comes into play and runs along this exact theme the entire way through. This puffin might get a muffin, but just because he gets one doesn't make him happy. And nonsense, ensues from there.
With tongue in cheek humor, this book takes an interesting turn away from the usual story lines. The puffin takes his attitude onto show more a mission to make it clear that just because a puffin gets a muffin in a book, doesn't mean anything. The illustrations swing right along, giving the right dab and bump of humor to make the entire thing cause giggles along the way. The reader/listener is drawn in and made to think about the problem as well. It makes a funny read-aloud which is sure to hold childrens' attention until the last page.
I received a complimentary copy and found this to be such a cute, funny book that I wanted to leave my honest thoughts. show less

A cranky puffin is stuck with the penguins at the zoo, where people flow by and admire the "funny-looking," "sweet," "kooky little penguin." The poor puffin loses it - until one little girl with her dad in tow sees him and recognizes him for who and what he is (offering a quick education to the reader on the differences between puffins and penguins as well). Even after the girl and her dad walk away, and new people come up and mis-identify him yet again as a penguin, the puffin is left with show more hearts for eyes.
