This is a collection of sermons focussed on meditations on Lent-through-Trinity topics. Most were from Stephen's time at the Church of the Redeemer, although there is one sermon from a funeral at St. Mary Magdalene, at which I was present. I should note that I knew him from about 1986 through the early 1990s. The context is important, because the knowledge and churchmanship of his audiences shaped what he would say and how it was presented.

These are not quite, to my mind, as good as the show more short off-the-cuff homilies he would give at Low Mass, with a single topic and no space for expansion; but they are very good nevertheless. They have the typical touches of humour that leavened his preaching (and, based on the lecture notes published after his death, his teaching as well), and reflect his combination of keen analytical skills and extensive knowledge of both theology and church history. show less
