This is a very grave set of four interconnected songs, dedicated to Wiliam Warfield. To my eye, studying the score, it takes an artist of that excellence to do justice to them. The tonal language is very different from the rather mellifluous sound ordinarily associated with Diamond, and I can only attribute that to the restless, even anguished mood of the words.
