Call this your basic mash-up between a portal fantasy for adults and your typical military SF scenario, as the authors play with the concept of modern human cultures finding themselves forced to repel an invasion from your stereotypical fantasy realm. The authors seem to have had a lot of fun with this scenario, and you probably will too. What gives this exercise a little more depth than it might have, is that one of the authors (Dave Klecha) has actual military experience from the "War on show more Terror" that informs the depiction of the US Marine force who find themselves caught up in the chaos of it all. After magical portals open around the world, NATO and US forces have captured the portals and established bases on the other, magical world, but a Corrupted One keeps sending waves of attackers. That’s all setup: a band of Marines has to get an ally to safety, but weird things keep happening, including the appearance of a Ranger. It’s fun but don’t expect any interrogation of militarism/colonialism (though they end up fighting some greedy Earth humans).
