The Chess-Player's Handbook: A Popular and Scientific Introduction to the Game of Chess by Howard Staunton
I actually own the 1942 edition of this book in harcover. a nice read, though the notation is not Algebraic, Staunton's introduction and theory on piece movement is very entertaining.
