- Kristin Henderson is an author and journalist, including reporting from Iraq and Afghanistan. Her work earned the Military Reporters & Editors association’s large market newspaper/magazine awards for domestic coverage as well as overseas coverage, and Bread Loaf fiction scholarships and a nonfiction fellowship.
She’s the author of The Zargari Incident, While They’re at War, and Driving by Moonlight. Her reporting has appeared in The Washington Post Magazine, The New York Times, and Military.com, among others. Media appearances include NPR’s “All Things Considered” and “Fresh Air”, NBC’s “Weekend Today Show”, MSNBC, C-SPAN, BBC, and Australian radio (ABC).
Kristin is married to a Navy chaplain who served with the Marines in Afghanistan and Iraq. She lives in Washington, DC, where she’s on the staff of the Yellow Ribbon Fund, a nonprofit that assists injured service members and their families.

A book that makes me cry "shame" to the United States for so many reasons. We don't pay these men and woment sufficiently. We don't care about their emotional stress when they return. We don't care adequately for their families while they are deployed. Henderson has written a book that makes me pay attention. Much, much better than her first book: this one is alive. Thanks go to her and to all the women [and male spouses, too] for allowing their stories to be heard.
Quaker author Kristin Henderson sends her Lutheran chaplain husband off to war immediately after 9/11. She leaves Washington, DC on a journey across the country with her German shepherd and tells of her feelings and encounters with others as she travels.
This book started out as a series of articles. I can see where the content in article form would have been even more powerful than it is as a book. As a book, however, it does a very good job of explaining the emotional and intellectual aspects of the lives of families with people in a war zone. It has been over a year since my husband's return, but this book was still able to reach me and help explain some of what we went through as a family. I will be reccomending this book to others in show more our situation. show less
One of the most touching and heart wrenching books I've read. From one military wife to another, thank you for telling our story.
