A neglected circus bear breaks her chains and wanders into town, scaring the residents. In the end the story tells us she is happy to be bound again by a stronger chain.

Bernadette is a circus bear. She wakes up before her trainer and wants the attention of the helpers carrying food and water to the other animals. She starts dancing around to get their attention and breaks her leash. She is hungry and thirsty so she goes over to drink with the elephants. The helpers notice she is loose and scream. Bernadette runs away into the city. She tries to get people to feed her but they all run away scared. Finally her trainer comes and rescues her and takes her home show more to eat.

I like this book because the pictures make the book exiting. It is a cute fantasy story. Nothing bad happens to the bear.

I would use this book in the classroom for a fun reading. The students could then tell about their experinces at the circus or the zoo. show less
