Hoosier mosaics was Maurice Thompson's first book. It's a collection of short stories, all set in west central Indiana between the Civil War and 1875. Most of the stories are fractured romances between rube Hoosiers and more cultured (or rogueish) people from out of state. Occasionally the tables are turned and native cunning beats nicety. Most of the stories are pleasant but forgettable; at least none are racist and mean-spirited.
Romance set against the Revolutionary War capture of Vincennes (Indiana) by British troops and their subsequent defeat by George Rogers Clark's army. The romance is mildly tedious and there are a few silly plot elements, but mostly it holds up as historical novel.
