Although the scholarship is a bit dated, the contents hold up well. Akrigg's is a decent assessment of the English Court under James I. James was a deep, complex individual and Akrigg goes far in analyzing the intricacies of James, as a poltical being primarily but also as a husband, a father, and as a person. Akrigg's primary focus is on political events, but we get good glimpses of cultural and economic developments as well.
