This is a good book that considers the changes happening in our colleges, and also compares US Education with other countries. Great food for thought here, but it was published in 2001 so the discussion is dated.
American higher education in the twenty-first century : social, political, and economic challenges by Philip G. Altbach
The third edition is filled with tons of excellent articles. (I was surprised, honestly.) Most of the newer articles look at where some of the current higher ed trends are heading.
