Inoffensive little play built on the book of biblical apocrypha known as the Book of Tobit. Bridie writes in a mild-mannered comedic style that was popular in the 1930s, but would surely not fare so well in the modern theatre. Tobit sends his son Tobias to receive repayment for a debt. An angel in disguise helps the boy through a series of romantic and magical adventures. Fluffy and generally entertaining, with an occasional solid laugh.
James Bridie deserves to be better known ... we saw a play or two of his at the Fringe in the early 1990s, and have collected the odd volume of plays as a result.
