Some time in the 1980s, I found a couple of books from the We Were There series in our local library. These books were old enough already that they were difficult to find even at that time, but I loved them. I have always really liked historical fiction that helped me to feel like I was on the spot when things happened long ago. I have found just a few reprints of these books for our library, and read a couple of them this week. This one seemed to tell the story of the Lewis & Clark show more Expedition pretty accurately, although I can’t remember if a boy by the name of Tom was along—he may have been invented for the story. This book is good for a quick introduction/overview of the expedition. show less
I was handed this book by my wife as we wandered through a local bookstore in Charlottetown PEI because it made reference to birds in the summary (I am an avid birder...). It was a fortuitous encounter.
I loved this book very very much. If you like birds at all, it is a hit; if you like a clever story with complex characters evolving through the story, it is a must. I am actually shocked that (at this point) only 3 people have this book in their library. It is an outstanding book.
My one show more criticism is that it is a bit difficult going at the beginning and ending due to the narrarator. The character, a Rabbi, uses so much Hebrew and / or Yiddish that it lost me. This is a minor annoyance in an otherwise perfect book.
It is not often that I add the tag "Rereading List" for my library. I look forward to my second encounter. show less
