Alain Nadaud

Nice title and not so nice things to say about librarians, what they look like and what they do. Obsessive about books - and goes on a bit. I enjoyed the first half much better than second which seemed to be all about getting rid of or not getting rid of books and books as organic beings.

On reflection it wasn't that bad - here are some more thoughts about it and how it came into my possession:
Book bought at Gilbert by the Saint Michel metro station, the nearest one to Notre Dame but not the show more one we got off at; instead we got off at Chatelet, exiting at the wrong place - there are so many exits (or sorties as they call them in France) at this massive interchange - and then walked for 20 minutes in the Parisian heat until we came across another metro station or at least thought it was another metro station but it wasn't, it was another entrance to Chatelet and we still couldn't see Notre Dame de Paris but we did eventually see it over the river and before we got in the man in front of us, who was wearing his cap back to front, was asked to take it off in deference of God, Victor Hugo who died in 1885, Esmeralda or her goat whose name escapes me but definitely not in obsequious homage to the perverted Cardinal Frollo, and then, once we had completed our visit to the holy shrine and were contemplating walking back to the hotel or catching a metro train, suddenly just beside us on the left bank, came upon Saint Michel and just next to it the big Gilbert bookshop whose tills (or caisses as they call them in France) are for some strange reason outside or as they say in French 'a l'exterieur'.
Anyway Nadaud hasn't a good word to say about librarians

this mystic novel take place in Alexandria,describing the journey of Pythagoras from Samos, the island where he was born, to Egypt seeking knowledge from the Egyptian priests, trying to reveal their mysteries.....
about the religion and practices he developed and his philosophical theories.....
He started a secret society called the Pythagorean devoted to the study mathematics...
his influence on Plato,and philosophy in general.....
his followers and their study for the sacred numbers that they show more thought it leads them to better understanding and worshiping OF God.....
a long road that was not an easy one...
they have to fight for the continuity of their belief and keep their society secret.....
i cant claim that i understand all that mystic and symbolic relation between numbers and religion ,there are paragraphs that i have to reread more than once to try to understand what he wanna say...
but in general it is an extraordinary novel that worth reading,,,,
