Louise Young (2) (1960–)

Having been impressed by the author's work on the ideology and marketing of Japanese empire, this monograph on the interaction between Tokyo and a number of relevant cities of the second rank seemed a bit slight in comparison. Still, Young does have interesting things to say about the nature of Japanese modernity and urbanism in the service of the greater theme of how while Tokyo might be the exemplar, elites in places such as Niigata and Sapporo worked hard to put their localities on the show more cultural map. Much of this monograph boils down to the interaction between mass education, cultural creation and modern marketing in the process of generating modern social consciousness. show less
