An important book of essays on women musicians & producers who have worked in the artistic world of mainstream media. The chapters seem to be most interested in linking the women to each other, their dominant songwriting themes and what they added to a pre-existing scene populated by males. Very thorough and the only females found not listed are Clare Grogan from Altered Images who was a early follower of Siouxsie Sioux and Corinne Drewery of Swing Out Sister.

Reads like an encyclopedia as show more the writing is meticulous and exact but tends to lose intensity and the poetic glow of these great women.

Subjects covered are gender relations, influence of Black music, self esteem, girl bands, and intergenerational politics. Published in 1997.

Bibliiography, B&W photos, and Index.
