Really fun mystery, the reading experience is one that reminded me of the feeling I had as a child reading Nancy Drew mysteries. So, think Nancy Drew grew up, lived some of the tragedies of life, traveled the world a bit, gathered an excellent best friend, and is now in her 20s taking on all the evils of her home state of Hawai’i. A joy.
This is one of the all time worst covers in the history of paperbacks.
That said, it's a really charming mystery set in Maui in the 1950s with two lady sleuths who believe me do not take shit from anyone. Refreshing and clever, I'll definitely be checking out Sheridan's other novels as well as others in this Rue Morgue reprint series. Lots of fun.

Not a great mystery, but fantastic for the atmosphere and setting in 1949 NY.
This is the first in a series of four books which feature Lily Wu and Janice Cameron. This first takes place in New York in 1949.
Cameron takes a room in a boarding house in the city and agrees to share with a beautiful Oriental girl,Lily Wu. Shortly after they settle in,the caretaker is murdered and all of the lodgers are of course suspect. Not long after, there is yet another murder and Wu,with the help of Cameron, investigates.
The book is of interest mainly because it introduces these two show more characters, who develop greatly in the later books. These take place in Hawaii.
'The Chinese Chop' itself is rather pedestrian and is only of passing interest. show less
