Whispers in the Dark continues the journey of Zelara, Lor, and Hale, but with two new characters that join the group. As with the previous books in the Carved Legacy series, this installment delves deeper into the complexity of relationships, personal struggles, and the intricacies of each character's background.
What I like about this series, is the way Miller addresses difficult and often delicate topics. Instead of simply describing emotions or relationships in a basic, two-dimensional show more way, she brings everything to life with depth and nuance. You can really feel the internal battles of each character, and it’s refreshing to see the story explore themes like personal demons, attraction, and identity with care.
This book had a slower pace than the previous ones. There was less action, and instead was more focused on dialogue and character development. We get to learn more about the different races, their history, customs, and even their everyday struggles. It was fascinating to see how each character’s past shaped them, and I really appreciated the emphasis on understanding and navigating these differences.
The relationship between Zelara and Eres stood out to me. Their dynamic was heartfelt and authentic, and it truly made my heart happy to see them connect in their own way. Zelara's straightforwardness, especially when it came to offering hard truths, is also a highlight. We could all use a little Zelara advice now and then.
To me, the underlying story of Whispers in the Dark is about the importance of living authentically. show less

As I delved into the pages of "Virin," I found myself captivated by this story. Zelara, our is not a vampire but a Virin—a special breed of vampyre hunters endowed with unique abilities, bound by their blessings. However, Zelara's world shatters when she faces expulsion from the Virin, losing everything she held dear.
The narrative unfolds with Zelara's quest for self-discovery in the absence of her Virin ties, thrust into a struggle for survival against her own kind and the very creatures show more she once hunted. The stakes escalate as she navigates a world where the hunted becomes the hunter, leaving her with a diminishing chance of survival.
Amidst the dark and eerie atmosphere, the narrative weaves in threads of goodness and light. Themes of tolerance and the importance of solidarity resonate throughout, offering more than just a tale of vampyre survival. The story invites readers to reflect on the significance of embracing diversity and the realization that one cannot always face challenges alone.

“Sometimes the circumstances of the world can render everything else- your efforts, your knowledge- useless. Circumstances can twist your entire existence until your life is nothing more than a distorted memory, placed away with those other memories that are all too painful to be thought over. Circumstances can change your existence so very much, until all your happiest moments in life must be tucked away, never to be heard from again.”

This was such a unique and show more interesting book. Main FMC is a servant girl that cannot help but get herself in trouble and talk back. The man she is in conflict with through the book is a Reaper who kills people and is quiet and aloof but also sweet and caring. I would consider this book a cozy book despite the bad things and trauma, but it also makes the book on the slow side. I really fell in love with the characters and the story and was fully invested. 4 out of 5 stars.

Exile by C. Miller was such a neat read for me. This is book 2 in the Carved Legacy series. I loved the dynamic between Lor and Hale—their banter was sharp, witty, and made the story for me.
