A Goldilocks read! This was my fourth try this year of a new mystery author... I was starting to think I’d never find a likable main character. They were too perfect of people, or too flawed to like, to too obviously meant to be perfectly flawed! Then I was recommended this series by Goodreads and found Kelly Porter, a character who was actually believably good at her job without being perfect.
I plan to read the whole series.
This was a very dark and disturbing read and not at all what the blurb that accompanied the book hinted the story would contain. Yes, it said that there were family secrets and estranged siblings, but that doesn't come close to the terrible darkness and evil that these family members endured and inflicted on one another. It is a very well-written book, the characters are interesting, and the storyline is really solid and interesting, but the content itself goes beyond even terribly show more dysfunctional family drama and secrets. There was physical abuse, psychological abuse, and murder spelled out in heartbreaking and stomach-turning detail. I honestly cannot say that this was a book I am glad I read, but if you are a fan of books that contain dark and disturbing abuse, then you will enjoy this story. I cannot give it a bad review, but can only say that it was not my type of novel.
I received this book as an advanced reader copy from the publisher in exchange for my honest review.

This was a fantastic read. Full of multi layered plots and sub plots. The scenery was just beautiful (even though the deaths occurred there and they were quite disturbing.)

The characters were great Kelly and her sister Nikki and her mum all interacted well and grew with the story.

Can’t wait to read the next in the series.
Thoroughly enjoyable, as were the rest in the series. New characters, personal conflicts, work and families brought together with excellent and compelling writing. Read it too quickly really and now have to wait for the next in the series.
